On film that is. My dad shot film until a few years ago, but I never had much interest in it until this thing. I actually have the little Opus point and shoot to thank for this, but the Minolta is the thing that’s really got me hooked. I’ve been on about a two week binge of info and reviews of more cameras, in an effort to find an ideal, affordable SLR. I’m loving the Hi-Matic, but now I want something with aperture priority ability.
It seems while I’m still ahead of the curve on Hi-Matic AF2 popularity and prices, I’ve missed the boat on the more well-known Minolta cameras. Still, they seem to offer more bang for the buck than their contemporary Nikons and Canons.
My reading has got me narrowed down (mostly) to either an XE-7, or an XD11 (also called XD7)
XD11s usually show up cheaper, but there’s something about the XE-7 that really works for me.
Another possibility is if an old friend of my dad still has my dads old Fujica ST 801
It’s weird, I’ve spent years looking up cars for sale multiple times a day, but now I’m suddenly looking up old cameras at least half of that time instead.

I should try to find my old AE-1 Program and mess around with it. I know it’s not fancy or professional quality but I did buy some lenses for it back in the day plus the lens cover for the 50mm has the logo for the 1984 Olympics on it.

Minolta s are awesome. My brother has the XG-7 with the 1.7 lens. I know he’s always talking about their x-570 and x-700 but don’t know much about the individual models.
Have you looked at KEH ? They’re where I get my bulk of stuff from.
I just got some film developed from my F4S. Just gotta get around to making a post.

I’m appreciating how I’m forced to decide on the picture I’m going to take, before I take it. My DSLR has me so used to taking like 16 versions of the same shot and picking the one I like best, so having to pay for each shot is kind of refreshing, if expensive. So far it’s still a lot of fun

I don’t know the X-570, but the X-700 is supposed to be quite good. A step down in build quality from the XD11 and previous, to compete with the Canon AE-1 pricewise. I like how extremely 80s they look, I wouldn’t mind trying one out but I definitely want the metal of an older one.
I have looked on there, luckily they don’t have an XE-7 in good shape, I’m trying to save money for Christmas and buy an SLR in the new year.

It’s definitely a different mind set with film. Maybe a little more conservative since every shot counts.

Somewhere in my storage boxes of old camera gear and electronics , I have a beautiful Minolta SRT-101 with 3 lenses and a small stack of filters . My dad bought it new around 1970, used it a few dozen times, then left it in his closet for decades. He gave it to me around 2002 when I took my first photography class in college.
The crazy thing was when I first fired up the light meter, the original mercury battery still had enough life to work for a couple weeks before finally keeling over. The bummer is that, while replacement zinc batteries are available, they don’t offer the precisely same voltage.
Unfortunately, the only photos I seem to still have from it are on slides. And I probably have about 2,500 slides.
I even found one of my car from way back then...

Pretty much. Because one photography medium, stereo gear, and three cars wasn’t enough I guess.
